Culver City Shares
Families feeding Families
When the Coronavirus Pandemic hit and The Whole 9 Gallery was forced to close, it opened the door to utilize our space in a different way to serve the needs of the community. A quick assessment showed that many local citizens had lost their jobs and that they, plus many families with children in the Culver City School District, needed groceries immediately.
Culver City Shares was created as a way to mobilize the community around helping it’s own citizens during this time of great and unexpected need – a way for families to help feed other families.
Through Culver City Shares, we’ll provide two bags of groceries per family each week as long as there is a need and we can raise the funds. The number of families we serve will be based on need and funds raised, but our goal is to distribute to 200 families per week which will reach about 1,000 people. The bags will include good stuff that we would all want including bread from Larder Baking Co. and pasta from Sorrento’s Italian Market, as well as other dried goods and fresh produce. We’ll even be including a recipe every week and each bag will be packed full of love.
Here’s how you can help:
1. FRUIT FROM YOUR TREES. You can drop fruit off from Thursday through Saturday at The Whole 9 Gallery, 3830 Main Street. If the door is locked, just leave by the front door or walk through the alley and leave by the back door (look for the murals).
2. HEAVY PLASTIC & PAPER GROCERY BAGS. If you’ve been collecting ’em, we’ll take ’em! We need clean paper grocery bags with handles and heavy plastic bags like the ones at Target, Smart & Final, and Pavilions. Please…no produce bags or the lightweight bags at most grocers.
3. GIVE US 5. Add five items to your grocery list every week that are hard for us to buy wholesale — this includes low sugar cereal like Cheerios and Corn Flakes, canned tuna in water, and gallon zip lock bags.
4. Pitch in some cash below. Any amount is appreciated — each $30 provides two bags of groceries to help feed a family for a week.
Let everything you do, be done with love.
